Our Values
The Good Samaritan Ethos
The Good Samaritan ethos lies at the heart of Holy Innocents’ High School’s mission and shapes how we learn, lead and serve as a community. Rooted in our values of Humility, Integrity, Respect and Love, it is a way of seeing and responding to others — recognising the dignity and needs of each person, crossing boundaries where necessary, and responding with compassion and responsibility.
At HIHS, we seek to form young people who not only receive care, but also learn to become contributors to their communities. Through their relationships, choices and actions, students learn to look beyond themselves, take responsibility for others and use their strengths in service of the common good. In doing so, they grow as Good Samaritans with the Courage to Lead and Compassion to Serve.
The Good Samaritan ethos is lived out through three interconnected thrusts:
Inner Work begins with the formation of the self. Students are given opportunities to reflect on their experiences, understand themselves and grow in character. Through platforms such as the Good Samaritan Portfolio, students take ownership of their reflections and personal growth. The Gideon Journey extends this formation beyond the classroom, broadening students’ perspectives and spheres of care through overseas civic learning experiences.
Accompaniment, inspired by the Emmaus narrative, reflects our commitment to walk alongside one another. For students, this means bringing together academic, pastoral, Special Educational Needs and counselling support so that each child is known, supported and able to flourish. The same spirit extends to staff through a culture of collegiality, mentoring and strengths-based development.
Hospitality is our commitment to creating spaces — physical, relational and pedagogical — where people feel welcomed, valued and able to participate. It is reflected in environments that encourage connection and collaboration, as well as in teaching practices that respond to diverse learners. Programmes such as the Mustard Seed Project (MuSP) extend this spirit into learning by enabling students to connect knowledge across disciplines and apply it to authentic issues affecting their communities.
Ultimately, the Good Samaritan ethos is more than a set of programmes or practices. It is the shared disposition we hope to nurture across the HIHS community: to see the person, respond with compassion, and have the courage to act so that others may belong and flourish.
